Becoming a donor is not scary!
In order to simply get on the bone marrow donor registry you just need to submit a buccal epithelium — a swab from the oral cavity, as well as fill out a questionnaire
Your data is then sent to the lab
You will then receive a notification that your information has been entered into the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry
From now on, you're a potential donor
If there is a match and you are matched with a specific patient, you will be contacted by a registry staff member
If you have confirmed your consent to become a donor, you will be invited to the cell procurement center, where specialists will explain in detail about donation
If you agree to donate, you will be organized a trip to St. Petersburg to one of the clinics
At the clinic, you are examined to make sure you are healthy
It is up to you to choose which of the 2 ways to give the biomaterial:
Routine blood donation from a vein
Collection of cells from the vein is painless and lasts 4-6 hours
Collecting cells from the pelvic bone
Sitting in a comfortable donor chair, you can watch TV, listen to music or an audiobook in peace and quiet
Bone marrow is taken under general anesthesia
During the procedure (lasts about 40 minutes), no more than 10-20 ml per kg of donor are taken
Bone marrow fully recovers in four weeks
You can become a donor if:
You're between the ages of 18 and 45
Your weight is over 50 kilograms
